About Karen

A lifetime of looking.

A lifetime of listening.

Karen Doochin Vingelen did not arrive at art consulting by accident. She arrived at it the way most meaningful things happen: through a lifetime of quiet preparation that only makes sense in hindsight.

Where it started

Art was simply part of home.

Karen grew up surrounded by art. In her family, collecting was not a hobby or a strategy. It was simply the way a home was lived in, with pieces gathered over time, passed between generations, and chosen because they carried something worth keeping.

Some of those same pieces are with her still. They have traveled through every chapter of her life, holding the memory and emotion of the people and moments they have always represented. That is what art does when it is chosen with care. It does not just decorate a space. It holds a piece of the people who live there.

The homes that feel most alive are the ones where the art was chosen with the same care as everything else. Not matched to a sofa. Not sized to fill a wall. Chosen because it means something.

BACKGROUND

Everything she had learned pointed in one direction.

Before Canvas Art Consulting, Karen spent more than 30 years leading a family business in Nashville. Her background is in psychology and social work, and those years of running a business only deepened what that education began: a genuine ability to listen, to understand what people need, and to ask the right questions and pay attention to the answers.

When a friend asked for help finding art for her home, something clarified. The taste and instinct Karen had spent a lifetime developing were not just personal. They were something she could offer to others. The experience confirmed what the rest of her life had been quietly preparing her for, and Canvas Art Consulting grew from that moment.

WHAT KAREN BELIEVES

Art is not the finishing touch.

It is part of the foundation.

Karen believes that most people already know, somewhere in themselves, what they are drawn to. They have felt it standing in front of a piece they could not stop looking at, or walking through a home where everything felt right without knowing exactly why. They just have not had someone help them trust that feeling and follow it.

That is what Karen does. She does not impose a vision or push a style. She asks questions, pays attention, and sources work that resonates with the people who will live with it every day. Art that sets the tone of a room. Art that carries emotion. Art that creates the kind of memory that stays with a home long after everything else has changed.

Karen Today

Based in Nashville.

At home in the South.

Karen lives in Nashville with her husband and their four children, most of whom are now in college. When the family travels together, she always carves out time for museums and galleries, because she has never believed that looking at art is something you do when you have nothing else to do. It is something you make time for.

At home, she loves to entertain. She will spend as much care setting a table as she does choosing a piece of art for a wall, because she believes that a home is felt most fully when it is full of people. The warmth of a meal shared, candles lit, laughter around a table are all parts of the feeling she wants every home she works with to hold.

Outside of art and family, Karen practices Pilates, plays golf, seeks out live music, and cooks whenever she can. She is, above all, someone who pays attention to the things that make a life feel worth living. Canvas Art Consulting is the work she was always moving toward, and she brings to it everything a lifetime of looking, listening, and caring deeply has given her.

"She does not push styles or trends. She helps you find what belongs in your home."
